Who This Blog Can Help

Serving best Crochet designs and products since 2008

I started this blog in 2008 as a place to talk about crochet designing, buying and selling. In 2012 the blog focus took a turn when I decided to help women in the yarn arts industry find answers and help with building their yarn businesses. Today, Yarn Obsession is a place for information for serious yarn artists, as well as a fun place to learn and grow crochet skills!

What I Talk About

I help tired, overwhelmed yet motivated women learn how to manage time & maintain the balance needed to start, grow & build a prosperous, fun and fulfilling crochet business

About Me

In 2001 I taught myself to crochet after meeting my boyfriend’s grandmother. He became my husband and now crochet is a HUGE part of my life, how’s that for serendipity?!

In 2006 we were expecting our first child and although I was excited I also felt sad that I didn’t have a way to stay home with my baby. At 23 weeks I began to have pre-term labor so my doctor promptly put me on bed-rest. Being put on bed-rest gave me the opportunity to look into ways I could use my crochet skills to stay home with my son. During that time I found a small website called Etsy and opened a shop. That was going to be my way of staying home. Unfortunately, being pregnant affects everyone differently and for me it was a complete lack of focus. Try as I might, I completed only one project throughout my whole bed-rest time. But discovering Etsy and the possibilities was a breakthrough.

In January of 2011 after a few years of working on and off and having another baby I decided to send a pattern for publication in a magazine. In March of 2011, about a week before I was to have my baby, I heard back from the magazine. They wanted my pattern! It was then that I truly realized my calling was in my yarn and I needed to make it work.

In August of 2011 I began making crochet tutorial videos for basic stitches. The positive feedback I received on my videos helped push me forward and I decided in 2012 that I wanted to focus fully on my yarn work so I would be able to quit my job within a few months. In September of 2012 I again got laid off. On that day I made two decisions: 1) I was going to do everything I could to build my business and help others along the way; 2) I was never going to take another full-time job.

Today Yarn Obsession is no longer selling completed items. Although I still design crochet patterns, my focus is in helping women build businesses while building their belief in themselves and their amazing talents. Since 2009 I’ve heard comments like ‘no one wants to pay what it’s worth’ or ‘there’s no way to make a business out of crochet’ and many negative comments that I want to shift the thinking. I am where I am today because I didn’t give up on the dream of building my own business and being home with my babies! That’s what I want to give back.

I love wine, entertaining friends and family, reading, dancing and of course crochet! I’ve been married to the love of my life since 2003, and we spawned a baby boy in 2006 and a baby girl in 2011. My dreams are coming true, let me help you reach yours!

Why I blog

Inspiring women is important to me yes, I know we have a number of women in the world doing great things, but until women in every industry feels completely empowered to do what she feels is right for herself, her family and her community, there is always room for more inspiration.

We make the difference as women it is within our power to create changes we want to see, especially in industries where we hold the most stock. The yarn industry needs to create equality around the world which will translate to helping women around the world. It’s important to do this at the grass roots level so we can grow stronger from the root.

Our Core Values

My mission is to share what I’ve learned, what I’m always learning, what empowers, educates, inspires and elevates other women to do the same. My blog has become my megaphone delivering the message that together we are stronger and we can make an incredible impact at home and around the world. When we find the strength to build ourselves, our families and our communities, we’ll find the strength together to build our businesses and the yarn industry.

I publish one new post each week. The best way to keep up and not miss a thing is to sign up for my e-mail list.

Thoughts on Yarn Obsession

Hello Sedie! Thank you for sharing how you got into crochet. I was wondering if it really is possible to make money of crochet, would you have to make items to be sold or make upon request, customly.

I have only been crocheting for about a year but have decided that I want to start making thing to sell. I have mainly been making for family and friends and now feel I am at a stage where I have the confidence to sell my items to the wider audience. After viewing your video on how to price my items, which has given me more of an idea on what to do I am looking forward to selling for a profit. Thank you for the advise.

Sedie, you are an absolute gift, an angel. The universe guided me straight to your website at the exact right time, as I am 30 weeks pregnant and looking further into starting my own crochet business/making clothing for my baby girl. I absolutely fell in love with your energy and your intent behind wanting to help guide women on this path of self discovery. I am so grateful for you and ALL that you do to help provide motivation and inspiration to women like yourself. Much love to you, you are truly a QUEEN! Also, I would love to receive the free ebook as well as subscribe to your mailing list, but there have been some complications regarding the password. I’d love to be apart of it! Thank you so much!
